Mountain Lakes, NJ Area Branch

Apply for a 2012 Local Scholarship

The Mountain Lakes Area Branch of AAUW provides Local Scholarships for women students in higher education. Deadline for Scholarship application and materials is  March 31, 2012 (see details below).

Congratulations to our 2011 Recipients! In 2011, we were divided a total of $6,000 among the following three recipients.
Kadianne Francis—is a graduate of SUNY in Oswego. There are eight children in her family and she is the first to receive a college education. While working at Penn State, Altoona, Kadianne is pursuing a Master's Degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Student Affairs in Higher Education. During her college years, she worked as a Resident Assistant (RA), which developed her interest in becoming a member of the college team that encourages and counsels students. Kadianne feels that this team is important to making college a positive experience. Boonton is her home base.

Hannah Morrow—from Kinnelon, will receive her Associate Degree in May and plans to continue her education at Ramapo College She hopes to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. As a young girl, Hannah suffered from Reflex Sympathetic Disorder (RSD) for many years. She was able to conquer this with the help of doctors and physical therapists. She has contributed to her education by working part-time at a legal office. Her ultimate goal is to open a rehabilitation center for disabled children.

Lauren Taylor—a resident of Boonton, graduated magna cum laude from Marymount College in 2003. She is currently a teacher's aide in a public preschool program for autistic children. Lauren has related successfully with these children and has found her position at the school so fulfilling that she decided to return to school as a full-time student. She will be working towards a Master of Education degree with special emphasis on students with disabilities.

In addition to the local scholarship amounts, the Branch also awarded $500 in 2011 to the national Eleanor Roosevelt Named Grant Honoree program in the name of Director Gloria Diamond and the University Women’s Chorale for their tireless promotion of scholarship fundraising and promotion of musical expression and enjoyment within the Branch and the Community.

At various times during the year, AAUW's national Educational Foundation offers Fellowship and Grant programs, with deadlines falling in different months of the year, including: American Fellowships, Career Development Grants, Community Action Grants, Selected Professional Fellowships, and University Scholar-in-Residence.
