Afternoon Book Group

Thursday, January 26, 1:30 pm—Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet: A Novel by Jamie Ford

Ford’s first novel focuses on “Henry Lee, a Chinese-American in Seattle who, in 1986, has just lost his wife to cancer. After Henry hears that the belongings of Japanese immigrants interned during WWII have been found in the basement of the Panama Hotel, the narrative shuttles between 1986 and the 1940s in a predictable story that chronicles the losses of old age and the bewilderment of youth.” (Publishers Weekly) “Henry Lee is a 12-year-old Chinese boy who falls in love with Keiko Okabe, a 12-year-old Japanese girl, while they are scholarship students at a prestigious private school in World War II Seattle. Henry hides the relationship from his parents, who would disown him if they knew he had a Japanese friend. His father insists that Henry wear an "I am Chinese" button everywhere he goes…” (School Library Journal)

Hostess: Marge Woodnorth

You do not need to read the book to attend. We are a small, casual group of eclectic readers and would love to have you join us. We will be picking books for the upcoming months.

January 31—March by Geraldine Brooks (2005) Hostess: Carol Schneider; Facilitator: Angela Margolit

Brooks became interested in the Civil War after moving to Virginia in the 1990s. Her book March, imagines the chaplain’s life led by John March, the absent father in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. The novel traces twenty years in March’s life, chronicling his journey from innocence to experience… “Thanks to Geraldine Brooks, the father of the Little Women is no longer faceless. March is beautifully written, cleverly conceived and dramatically plotted.” (BookReporter review)

Four-time Tony Award Winner Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis star in a re-imagined and jazz-oriented version of the Gershwins’ 1935 classic,

adapted by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan Lori-Parks. The story, set on Catfish Row, Charleston, South Carolina, started as a book,

then was a play, the Gershwins made the story into a folk opera, and finally came a 1942 musical and a 1959 film starring Sidney Poitier and

Dorothy Dandridge. Enjoy this timeless love story and marvelous music Lori-Parks has fleshed out the characters with a bit more dialogue, yet the running time is less.

Wait List Available: Contact Bonnie at bcytron@yahoo.com  or 973-600-9970 if you would like to join us for a spectacular day of  museum—lunch — theatre
