The World According to Garp

Thanks to all the support, we were able to donate a nice amount to the Scholarship Fund. In the past years, the group has showen: Frida, Two Women, The Grass is Greener, The Color Purple, Silkwood, The Third Man, The Songcatcher and Elizabeth. Professor of Film and AAUW member Joyce Frei enlightened us with her great knowledge as she spoke about each film. Thank you, Joyce Frei! "The AAUW Art Film Group will take a summer hiatus and will be continuing with Joyce's great commentaries in the fall with more interesting films. We are looking for more members interested in helping with set-up and breakdown. Also, anyone who like to assist with refreshments or learning the video equipment, please call or e-mail Shavaun Pizar, 862-368-4517

September 28Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life (1874), George Eliot [Mary Anne (Marian) Evans Lewes] (800+ pp. – that’s why it is our

Summer reading.) This is a sprawling book by the author of the better known Silas Marner, with a fleet of characters that would make a soap opera proud.

And, in truth, the novel was first serialized in “book” installments as many of Charles Dickens novels were. While inspecting the motivations and aspirations

of a panoply of provincial characters, Eliot also looks at the large issues in medicine, commerce, and theology of the day. The author has been called

England’s female Shakespeare; the book has been voted in the top 10 fiction achievements in English. Conquer this monumental book and join us for

the discussion.

RVSP Hostess: Pat Heller;

Call with any questions or if you would have read the monthly selection and would like to join us. Coordinator Gail Richman
